In answer to your questions about Underthesame Sun and Tanzania concerning Volunteering

                          Photo show the albino children

As more people like you show interest in the UTSS cause by visiting our website, a few key themes have evolved. Our automated email response is an attempt to answer common questions as quickly and clearly as possible.
Although this may seem impersonal, please be assured that we take your request for information very seriously. Staff at our Canadian office is committed to reading all queries coming from the UTSS website. We will reply to any email questions not addressed by this automated response. If the information below does not provide an adequate response and you do not hear from us within the next 5 business days, please let us know by requesting a personal response through another email. We appreciate your understanding and are very thankful for your shared interest in this very significant cause.

QUESTION
NUMBER 1:  Which items can be shipped to
Tanzania?

The following list of items are those
things which can be accepted by UTSS
for shipment to Tanzania (PLEASE NOTE THAT CLOTHING, HATS AND SUNSCREENS MUST
BE NEW):

  • WIDE-BRIMMED HATS - children's/youth
    sizes are needed most. (Unfortunately,
    baseball caps cannot be accepted
as they do not provide adequate
    sun protection.)

  • SUNGLASSES -
    can be "used",
but must be clean and in good condition.

  • SUNSCREEN LOTION -
must have a minimum Sun Protection
Factor of 35 - the higher the SPF,
the better. All bottles must be
    new and unopened. Please place
each bottle in a zip-lock bag and
seal it before it is mailed/shipped
    (this reduces chance of leakage
    during transport).

  • LONG-SLEEVED SHIRTS -
    must be light-weight and definitely
    LONG-SLEEVED. No T-shirts or short-sleeved
shirts can be accepted. Light colours
are best as they reflect the sun.

  • SCHOOL
    SUPPLIES
    of any kind will
not be accepted as we prefer
    to purchase them in Tanzania
    for several reasons:

    1. They are easily purchased in
      Tanzania while supporting the
      local economy.

    1. Out of respect to the schools
who tend to know what is needed
      but lack funds.

    1. Shipping costs are higher than
      the value of these goods.

  • MAGNIFIERS -
    small, hand-held magnifiers are
    accepted.  PLEASE
NOTE that UTSS does not accept
    battery-operated "flashlight" magnifiers
    or stand-alone desk magnifiers.  UTSS
is also unable to accept prescription
    lenses/glasses/spectacles of any
    kind for delivery to Tanzania.

QUESTION
NUMBER 2:  To where
do I ship the above items?

US mailing address:

Under The Same Sun

c/o Mike's Parcel Pickup

183 W. Stutsman Street

Pembina, ND   58271-4100

Canadian mailing address:

Under The Same Sun

c/o Multicultural Family Centre

51 Morrow Avenue

Winnipeg, MB  R2M 1A5

Once goods arrive at either of the
above addresses, they will be shipped
via secure transport to the UTSS
office in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania,
for distribution to people with albinism.

QUESTION
NUMBER 3: Is Under The Same Sun a “legitimate” charity
and are my donations being used honestly?

At UTSS, we understand in today's
world why people ask this question.
Please be assured that Under The
Same Sun is a Canadian federally-registered
charity and is in accordance with
The Income Tax Act of Canada. We
also have a 501(c)(3) exempt organization
in the US known as “Under the Same
Sun Foundation (USA)” for our US donors.
Furthermore,
UTSS is also registered and recognized
under The Non-Governmental Organizations
Act, 2002 of the United Republic
of Tanzania. All funds donated go
directly to assist persons with albinism
in Tanzania - they are not used for
administrative purposes.

QUESTION NUMBER 4: How do I contact schools in Tanzania?

Under The Same Sun works with a few
schools in Tanzania which are currently
assisting children with albinism
to remain safe and to receive an
education.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide
mailing addresses for these schools.
They are located in extremely remote
areas with limited, if any, mail
service.
Furthermore, any mailed parcels are
highly unlikely to arrive at these
schools
due to unreliable delivery systems.
Such items are often lost, delayed
or stolen
unless they are delivered directly
by established, reliable contacts.

Therefore, it is best to send any
of the above items listed in Question
Number
1 to the US and Canadian addresses
listed in Question Number 2. From
there,
items will be shipped directly to
the UTSS office in Dar es Salaam
from where
they will be transported directly
to the individual schools.

QUESTION NUMBER 5: How do I send monetary donations to UTSS?

Under The Same Sun accepts credit
card donations through our website:
www.underthesamesun.com

Cheques can be mailed to the Under
The Same Sun office at Suite #400,
15225 – 104 Avenue, Surrey,
BC CANADA, V3R 6Y8. Cheques can be
in US or CDN dollars. Cheques should
be made payable to: Under
The Same Sun

QUESTION NUMBER 6: How do I adopt a child with albinism from Tanzania?

Under The Same Sun is not involved
in or with any adoption procedures
or agencies in Tanzania. As a result,
we cannot offer any advice or information
on this subject.

QUESTION NUMBER 7: Can I write to and be a pen-pal with adults/children
with albinism in Tanzania?

Please be aware that the vast majority
of Tanzanians do not speak or read
the English language. Although English
is spoken more frequently in business,
governmental and tourism realms,
the official language of Tanzania
is Kiswahili. Furthermore, due
to security concerns, we are not
able to release the contact details
of individual Tanzanians.

QUESTION
NUMBER 8: Can I sponsor an individual child
with albinism in Tanzania?

At this time, all donations
will go directly to sponsoring education
for
persons with albinism in Tanzania as
a general donation
. Due to
the urgency of the situation as well
as security precautions, we are not
able to assign donors to a student
with whom they can be in personal
contact. Their identity and location
are frequently hidden to prevent
further risk.

QUESTION
NUMBER 9: How can I get involved ( partner)
with UTSS?

We admire your passion and desire
to join UTSS in this very significant cause.

UTSS does not have a volunteer program at this
time nor do we have job positions available in
our Tanzanian office. We employ only Tanzanian
citizens with a preference given to persons with
albinism. I'm sure you will understand our reasoning
for this. As for our Canadian office, we are very
small and fully staffed

One thing you may want to consider is initiating
a fund raiser
(see FAQ # 5) as a way to
increase awareness. Feel free to use any of the
information on our website.  If you plan on
collecting physical items other than financial
donations please see FAQ #1 & #2. Thanks for
your shared concern

Economic Satire

"Social Reform", (c) George Cruikshank (1819)

GIANT BLACK PISSING GUILLOTINE: I'm coming! I'm coming! I shall have you! And though I'm at your heels now, I'll be at your heads presently.

The best way to begin learning about anything is to read satires of it; satire presents the field's cliches quickly, and criticises them memorably, with a free hand. But! most economists cannot write, and most writers have naive economic views - so the field is short of this source of instruction, counter-pretension and selfconsciousness. Here are some good ones:

The original: "solve poverty; make them eat their kids." Swift was targeting the treatment of labourers as commodities that can be found in hundreds of years of mainstream economic thought (the Malthusians before Malthus and Walrasians before Walras). Callous scientism is still around in places. It was quite hard to spot the satire at the time: the description of Irish people as animals was fairly commonplace well into the C19th. In proper Classical style Swift includes his actual view, backwards:
"Therefore let no man talk to me of other expedients: Of taxing our absentees at five shillings a pound: Of using neither clothes, nor household furniture, except what is of our own growth and manufacture: Of utterly rejecting the materials and instruments that promote foreign luxury: Of curing the expensiveness of pride, vanity, idleness, and gaming in our women: Of introducing a vein of parsimony, prudence and temperance: Of learning to love our country, wherein we differ even from Laplanders, and the inhabitants of Topinamboo: Of quitting our animosities and factions ... 'till he hath at least some glympse of hope, that there will ever be some hearty and sincere attempt to put them into practice."

This is good and mean. The poet Southey had weighed in on matters ill-befitting a poet. Most of this is just basic philosophy couched in snark about how poets can't think: "He does not seem to know what an argument is. He never uses arguments himself. He never troubles himself to answer the arguments of his opponents."

"Government is to Mr. Southey one of the fine arts. He judges of a theory, of a public measure, of a religious or a political party, of a peace or a war, as men judge of a picture or a statue, by the effect produced on his imagination."

The book this is from, Economic Sophisms, captures the snarky side of laissez-faire better than anything else. Depending on yr ideology, obviously, this will delight or enrage. Here's his send-up of trade barriers (which, by the way, no economy ever has gotten started without):
"We are suffering from the ruinous competition of a foreign rival who apparently works under conditions so far superior to our own for the production of light that he is flooding the domestic market with it at an incredibly low price; for the moment he appears, our sales cease, all the consumers turn to him, and a branch of French industry whose ramifications are innumerable is all at once reduced to complete stagnation. This rival, which is none other than the sun..."

Propaganda / forecast of the consequences of Communism. Proved largely correct: depicts mass exodus, draconian border controls and internal monitoring, police brutality, military escalation, unfree labour, ubiquitous corruption - but there's too much triumph in Richter's arc, and not enough mercy. (His message: "Socialism started off bad with bad people who got worse as their powers multiplied.") In its haste to declaim, to derail the gulag train, it can't really empathise with idealists betrayed . No jokes either: satire only in the sense of a Juvenalian jeremiad.

"The quasi-peaeable gentleman of leisure, then, not only consumes of the staff of life beyond the minimum required for subsistence and physical efficiency, but his consumption also undergoes a specialisation as regards the quality of the goods consumed. He consumes freely and of the best, in food, drink, narcotics, shelter, services, ornaments, apparel, weapons and accoutrements, amusements, amulets, and idols or divinities."
Only quasi-satirical: he is deadly serious about capitalism being frivolous barbarism. Satire is usually lightly written, but Veblen is as verbose as stylish prose can get (if not more). The Theory was an attempt to get economists to address sociocultural effects properly - but we've come barely any further since, and it was the sociologists that seized upon him instead.

  • "The Cuanduine Trilogy" (1926) by Eimar O’Duffy
"If there were no incentive to such people to save and invest their money, there would be no employment for anybody. We should simply stand around with our hands in our pockets and starve. That was what actually happened in primitive times. There were no capitalists to employ the people so they just sat down and died."

"A science-fiction exploration of Social Credit themes". Ignore that bit; this is really funny and humane stuff from a neglected member of Ireland's incredible artistic modernist blurt.

More than a hoax. Deadpan black comedy capturing the scientific savagery of think-tanks, very early on in that format's history. Also pushed the military-industrial complex thesis, now almost a truism.

"...even in the unlikely event that a lasting peace should prove 'attainable', it would almost surely be undesirable. The "war system" is essential to the functioning of a stable society: until adequate replacement for it might be developed, wars and an "optimum" annual number of war deaths must be methodically planned and budgeted."
The economic analysis isn't actually any good (it makes the fallacy of function), though that could be the point. Lewin eventually confessed, and got this wonderful barb out of the confession: "The charade is over, whatever is left of it. For the satirical conceit of Iron Mountain, like so many others, has been overtaken by the political phenomena it attacked. I’m referring to those other documents -real ones, and verifiable - that have appeared in print. The Pentagon Papers were not written by someone like me. Neither was the Defense Department’s Pax Americana study (how to take over Latin America). Nor was the script of Mr. Kissinger’s Special Action Group reported by Jack Anderson (how to help Pakistan against India while pretending to be neutral)." See also.

Anthropological study of academic economists. Captures the thing's cerebral machismo, which remains despite feminist and pluralist gains, and the 'fall' of ISLM general equilibrium.
"The facts (a) that the Econ are highly status-motivated, (b) that status is only to be achieved by making “modls,” and (c) that most of these “modls” seem to be of little or no practical use, probably accounts for the backwardness and abject cultural poverty of the tribe.  Both the tight linkage between status in the tribe and modlmaking and the trend toward making modls more for ceremonial than for practical purposes appear, moreover, to be fairly recent developments, something which has led many observers to express pessimism for the viability of the Econ culture."

Curious German book satirising business selfhelp fluff. "Economize on intelligence!"

"When Russian tanks rolled into Prague in 1968, the population fought back with wit. Every night graffiti appeared in Wenceslas Square with lines like “Soviet State Circus back in town! New attractions!” and “Soviet School for Special Needs Children—End-of-Term Outing.” People cracked jokes: Why is Czechoslovakia the most neutral country in the world? Because it doesn’t even interfere in its own internal affairs. And: Are the Russians our brothers or our friends? Our brothers—we can choose our friends."

Actually a history book, and poignant as anything. Could so easily have been an shallow racialist mess, but instead captures the anxieties and desparate humanity of it. A joke could be told about Stalin, or by Stalin: "Stalin gets a visit from a Georgian delegation: They come, they talk to Stalin, and then they go, heading off down the Kremlin’s corridors. Stalin starts looking for his pipe. He can’t find it. He calls in Beria, the dreaded head of his secret police. “Go after the delegation, and find out which one took my pipe,” he says. Beria scuttles off down the corridor. Five minutes later Stalin finds his pipe under a pile of papers. He calls Beria—"Look, I’ve found my pipe." “It’s too late,” Beria says, “half the delegation admitted they took your pipe, and the other half died during questioning.”" (But under Stalin, 200,000 people were imprisoned for telling jokes.)

Incredibly well-conceived piece in which Outis Philalithopoulos ("Nobody, Son of Loves-Stones"), explains his theory of academia - one applying the cynicism of economic method to economics itself. He's cast out for breaking ranks and endangering their sweet racket. Smith is comparable to Veblen here, commenting as she is on the self-satisified imperialism of economic method. For instance Public Choice theory ("politicians just hawk policies for votes"), or Becker's 'On the Interaction between the Quantity and Quality of Children' (1973).
"Consider the following seven propositions. All of them have been effectively promoted and publicized by academic economists ... As a bright high school student like yourself can clearly see, the list consists entirely of statements that are obviously wrong, and several of them are internally inconsistent. If economists were simply confused, we would expect to find no pattern in these statements. Instead, as predicted by Academic Choice, statements P1-P7 all directly enable rent-seeking by certain influential minorities (financial sector employees and corporate executives). Moreover, P1-P7 have also helped to generate market discontinuities with significant public costs, among which the recent global financial crisis."

Poem for First World of the Future

Do not forget, sweet superpower of mine,

Do not forget, though now you're fine,

Do not forget that when we weren't

exploiting you we were ignoring you,

chasing our Good Lives in the sun

while you parched in our shadows.

Don't forget -

though, who could?

Picture show gender base violence in Tanzania

Most  of women in Africa got problem of beaten by their husband.we support to stop this culture  to continue. example show in this picture.Together we can create changes

Musalia Mudavadi beyond 2012

Tana River insurgency.
I wish to express my deepest regret at the continuing bloodletting in Tana River County. The intransigence displayed where murder by vigilante groups on revenge missions and tolerance by agencies charged with security is left to rein must be brought to an end.
We should not let innocent lives become collateral damage to bad politics. Let us not compromise on the security of our people.
Political posturing that has escalated the mayhem should be probed to ensure communities are not incited against each other for selfish political mileage. It is surprising that the ringleaders have yet to be identified and punished in an insurgency that has claimed over 100 lives.
It is quite shocking that murder and terror can be unleashed so brazenly despite massive security presence. Certainly the hidden faces behind the murder orgy must be known to someone.
Left to continue the situation may lead to copycat conflicts that will undermine implementing devolution. The impunity that is at display may be part of a larger political engineering that will affect the coming elections and more so a plot to undermine implementation of devolved governments.
As at today (this afternoon) HE President Kibaki has ordered a dusk to dawn curfew, increased the security personnel in the area and promised the perpetrators shall be brought to book.
